Remember when every network in Nigeria had its own codes? Checking your balance on MTN was different from Glo, and buying data on Airtel was different from 9mobile. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) fixed this with NCC harmonized short codes. Now the same code does the same job on every network. This guide lists the main codes and explains how to use them.

What Are NCC Harmonized Short Codes?
Harmonized short codes are standard USSD and SMS codes approved by the NCC for all mobile networks. Operators were directed to implement them, with a migration deadline of 17 May 2023. The goal is to make codes easy to remember, reduce confusion and protect consumers.
Whether you use MTN, Airtel, Glo or 9mobile, the codes below work the same way.

Do Old Network Codes Still Work?
The NCC said old operator-specific codes would stop working after the migration. In practice, some older codes may still respond on some lines. However, the NCC harmonized short codes are the official ones, so use them first.
Why the NCC Introduced Harmonized Short Codes
- Simplicity: one set of codes for every network.
- Consumer protection: standard codes for DND and unsubscribing make it easier to stop unwanted charges.
- Less confusion: people who switch networks do not need to learn new codes.
- Better complaints handling: 300 connects you to customer care on any network.
Tips for Using Short Codes Safely
- Type codes carefully, including every asterisk and hash.
- Never share recharge PINs, transfer PINs or OTPs with anyone.
- Be careful with codes shared on social media that promise free airtime or data.
- Check your balance with *310# after any unexpected SMS.
