A quick note: I deliberately avoided buying professional acoustic foam panels from Jumia or imported products. A pack of 12 acoustic foam wedge panels on Jumia Nigeria costs between ₦15,000 and ₦35,000, which would have blown my entire budget on just one wall. The Soundproofing Process: What I Did Step by Step

I completed the entire project over a weekend (Saturday and Sunday). No hired help. No power tools. Just me, a hammer, some nails, a pair of scissors, and a lot of determination.

Step 1: Sealing the Jalousie Window Gaps

This was the most important step. The jalousie window was the single biggest source of noise entry. Those glass louvre blades overlap but never seal completely. Sound, especially the low-frequency rumble of a generator, passes right through the gaps between the blades.

What I did:

I took the self-adhesive foam weather stripping tape and ran a strip along the edge of every single glass blade where it overlaps with the next one. This is tedious work. The foam tape is soft enough to compress when the louvres close, creating a much tighter seal than the glass alone. It is the same tape people use around door frames in colder countries to prevent drafts, but here we are using it to block sound.

Step 2: Hanging the Heavy Blanket Over the Window

Sealing the louvre gaps helped, but glass itself is thin and transmits sound easily. I needed mass over the window to block more of the noise.

I took one of the heavy moving blankets and hung it directly over the entire window using nails hammered into the wall above the window frame. I folded the blanket double so that there were two layers of dense, woven fabric covering the window from top to bottom, with about 15cm of overlap on each side to prevent sound from sneaking around the edges.

Yes, this blocks all natural light from the window. I work with a desk lamp and my laptop screen anyway, and honestly, the noise reduction was worth the trade-off. During breaks, I can pull the blanket aside for ventilation and light.

Important note: this means I cannot use the window for airflow when the blanket is up. I manage ventilation by opening my door during quieter periods. Step 3: Installing the Blackout Curtain Over the Blanket

This creates a third layer over the window. I mounted the curtain rod above the window (about 20cm higher than the frame) and hung the thick blackout curtain over the moving blanket. The curtain extends about 30cm beyond the window frame on each side and reaches the floor.

Why add a curtain on top of the blanket? Two reasons. First, it adds another layer of mass that sound has to pass through. Second, the small air gap between the blanket and the curtain creates what acoustic engineers call a decoupled air cavity. Sound waves lose energy passing through the first dense layer (blanket), then again as they cross the air gap, and again through the second layer (curtain). Each transition reduces the sound energy.

It also looks much nicer than a blanket nailed to the wall. When clients see my room on Zoom, they see a normal-looking curtain, not a moving blanket.

Step 4: Sealing the Door Gap With a Draft Stopper

The gap under my door was roughly 2cm high and ran the full width of the door (about 80cm). That gap is an open invitation for noise. Sound does not need a large opening. Even a 1cm gap under a door can allow a significant amount of noise to pass through.

I attached the adhesive rubber door sweep to the bottom of the door on the inside. It took about 10 minutes to install. I peeled the adhesive backing, pressed it firmly against the bottom of the door, and trimmed the excess with scissors.

The door sweep has flexible rubber bristles that compress against the floor when the door is closed, creating a near-complete seal. It is not perfect because the floor is slightly uneven near the door frame, but it eliminated about 90% of the gap.

I also ran foam weather stripping tape around the door frame (the top and both sides) where the door meets the frame when closed. This addressed the smaller gaps around the door that most people overlook.

Step 5: Adding the Egg Crate Foam to the Wall Facing the Generator

The wall directly facing the compound where the generators sit is roughly 3.5 metres wide. I did not have enough egg crate foam to cover the entire wall, so I focused on the section between my window and the corner of the room closest to the generators, an area of about 2 metres × 2.4 metres.

I cut the egg crate foam into panels that I could handle easily (roughly 60cm × 60cm squares) and attached them to the wall using double-sided adhesive tape and some small nails for extra security.

Now, I want to be honest about something. Egg crate foam is not professional acoustic treatment. Acoustic foam designed for studios has specific density and cell structure optimised for sound absorption. Egg crate mattress foam is designed for comfort, not acoustics. Its sound absorption properties are modest, particularly for low-frequency sounds like generator rumble.

But it is not useless either. The convoluted (bumpy) surface increases the surface area that interacts with sound waves, and the foam material absorbs some mid and high-frequency energy. At ₦6,500 for a full sheet, it was the most affordable option I could find for wall treatment.

I noticed the most improvement in echo reduction inside the room. Before the foam, sounds bounced off the bare plaster wall and amplified the generator noise. After the foam, the room sounded “deader” and the generator noise, while still present, was less reverberant.

Step 6: Laying Carpet Offcuts on the Floor

Concrete floors with tiles reflect sound like a mirror reflects light. Every bit of generator noise that made it into the room was bouncing off the floor and adding to the overall noise level.

I laid the two thick carpet offcuts on the floor in the area between my desk and the window (the path the sound travels). This absorbed some of the reflected sound and reduced the overall noise level in the room by a small but noticeable margin.

Step 7: Repositioning My Desk

This cost ₦0 but made a real difference.

My desk was originally positioned against the wall directly facing the window, about 1.5 metres from the louvres. I moved it to the opposite wall, putting the maximum distance between me and the noise source. Sound intensity decreases with distance. Even moving an extra 2 metres away from the source makes a measurable difference.

I also angled my desk so that my microphone (for calls and recordings) faces away from the window. This simple change reduced the amount of direct generator noise that my microphone picks up during video calls.

After Soundproofing: The Results With Actual Decibel Readings

I waited until the following Monday to take my “after” readings so that I was testing under normal conditions, not immediately after installation when I might have an optimistic bias.

Now, let me explain why that is significant. The decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. A reduction of 10 dB is perceived by the human ear as roughly half the loudness. So going from 76.1 dB to 62.7 dB does not sound like a small change. It sounds like the generator was moved from four metres away to something more like twenty metres away. The noise went from “I cannot take a phone call” to “I can hear a faint hum in the background but it does not interfere with conversation.”

Is it silent? No. My room is not a recording studio. The low-frequency rumble of the generator is still slightly audible, particularly at night when everything else is quiet. But it went from being a productivity destroyer to a minor background hum that I can work through comfortably.

What I Would Do Differently Next Time

No project is perfect. Here is what I learned:

I would invest in a thicker door. My hollow wooden door is a weak link. It transmits sound even with the gaps sealed. A solid wood door would make a significant difference, but that is a ₦15,000 to ₦25,000 purchase that was outside this project’s budget. If your landlord allows it, swapping a hollow door for a solid one is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make.

I would add a second layer to the wall. One layer of egg crate foam helps, but adding a layer of mass loaded vinyl or even thick rubber matting behind the foam would block more low-frequency noise. The weather stripping peels off cleanly. The egg crate foam comes off the wall without damaging the paint if you use adhesive tape instead of glue. What about using thick curtains alone, without the blanket?

Curtains alone will provide some noise reduction, but not nearly as much as the blanket plus curtain combination.
